Current Style Car Registrations

The existing style of number plates is made up of seven characters. It starts with two letters, followed by a two-digit number and ends with three more letters. These registration plates can still be used to spell out words, for example: DE51 RED. This type of new number plate allows for a much larger number of combinations compared to the previous versions that were available before 2001. However, the letters "I" and "Q" are not allowed, but the letter "Z" can appear as part of the last three characters.

DVLA Number Plates: The Complete Guide

What are the legal requirements for displaying a DVLA number plate?

The legal requirements for displaying a DVLA number plate include using the correct font and size, ensuring it is reflective, and placing it on both the front and rear of the vehicle. The number plate must also be securely fastened and not obscured by any accessories or debris.

Buying a Physical Number Plate

If you're in need of a new set of number plates for your car, purchasing a physical set of acrylic plates is a great option. These plates are road-legal and can be customized to display your unique registration mark. Acrylic plates are durable and resistant to damage caused by weather conditions, making them a long-lasting choice for your vehicle's identification. Before purchasing a set of number plates, make sure they comply with the regulations set by your local transport authority. Both identification and copy of vehicle or registration ownership documentation are required by NewReg for RNPS recording purposes.

Purchase Regulations

Regulations have been established that affect the supply of number plates, including the assignment of a private number to a vehicle. Suppliers are now required to conduct identity and entitlement checks during transactions and maintain a record of them. These measures aim to combat illegal activities such as the production of counterfeit number plates and the misuse of registration numbers. The new regulations will also contribute to road safety by helping law enforcement agencies identify vehicles involved in criminal activities, including offences related to the display of number plates bearing any number other than the vehicle's officially recorded registration number, and the appropriate paperwork required for assigning a private number to a vehicle. To assign a private (personalised) number to a vehicle, you need one of the following: a V750 certificate of entitlement - you’ll get this if you buy a private number, or a V778 retention document or online reference number - you’ll get one of these if you take a number from another vehicle you own. If you assign your private number to a vehicle, you must get a new number plate made from a registered supplier. Check the rules for number plates and find your nearest number plate supplier.
